10 Camping Essentials To Add to Your Packing List

Prepare to enjoy your camping

When is the best time to write a camping packing list? When you return from camping. This is when you will vividly remember those items that you could have used, if only you had the sense to bring them.

Our camping trips are over until the next season, and here are the things we regret forgetting or recently added to the list:

1. Good pillows

We got rid of our space-saving inflatable pillows. They were squeaky and made your neck sweat. After many miserable experiments, we just bring regular pillows now. If you can’t sleep in a tent, that’s not a good camping trip.

2. Axe

Fire is a mandatory part of camping and its highlight. Most firewood comes as thick logs you need to chop. Plus, bring along someone with enough chops for chopping it.

3. A bucket for washing dishes

Disposable plates are a waste, and we don’t use them. Nevertheless, washing dishes is the worst chore of camping. A bucket where you can mix some soapy water is key to success.

4. Telescopic marshmallow roasting sticks

They collapse to a manageable size and let you sit comfortably in your chair for the roasting instead of crouching dangerously close and worrying that your knees will lock when you have to get up.

5. Brush and dustpan

You want the tent to be reasonably clean on the inside to create the right ambience. Plus, you should sweep the tent before packing it away to avoid disgusting surprises next time.

6. Insect repellent and insect bite gel

No commentary required.

7. String and clothespins

To hang up everything and keep it from flying away.

8. Bungee cords

Good for hundreds of tasks, including tying a garbage bag to a tree without any suitable branches.

9. Headlamp

Try finding something in your car one-handed after dark while holding a flashlight in another hand.

10. Collapsible greywater bucket

You don’t want to create a muddy mess at your site when washing up. And “collapsible” is the keyword for camping convenience.

Oh, and I’ve added something new to my list this year: a fly swatter. The value per gram of weight is unbeatable!
