10 Benefits of Being a Highly Sensitive Person
Be thankful that you have a soft side!

Are you a highly sensitive person? The concept of being highly sensitive is a personality trait that around 15 to 20% of the population possesses.
Highly sensitive people (HSP) process things more deeply than others. They are more plugged into their senses and surroundings than the average person.
Being more sensitive to their surroundings, sensitive people can become overwhelmed at times but there are benefits to being a HSP. If that sounds like you, rejoice and be proud! Here are some of the benefits of being highly sensitive.
You have a rich inner life.
While you may lament the fact that your mind is always going, it can be an asset! You think about things deeply and understand them at a deeper level. What seems like a curse to you is beneficial. Highly sensitive people often have insights that others don’t.

You’re creative.
Many highly sensitive people are creative because of the rich inner life they possess. They have relentless streams of ideas and deep thoughts flowing through their brain. So it’s not surprising they need creative outlets like writing or painting to channel their creative impulses.
Since many highly sensitive people are introverts, they don’t express their ideas as freely through conversation as socially oriented extroverts do. Creativity is their outlet.

You’re skilled at reading people
If you’re a highly sensitive person, you’re sensitive to the needs of others and attuned to social cues. You’re also acutely aware when something is wrong with a friend or family member. You know how to read people and determine what they need at an intuitive level. You can sense when someone is down or struggling, and relate to and comfort them.

The arts appeal to you.
Highly sensitive people are deeply moved by the arts. If you’re a HSP, you appreciate the different forms of artistic expression. You feel the power behind the forms and colors you and recognize that that they a deeper story or express an emotion.
Along with appreciating the artist’s view of their work and where their inspiration came from, you love to interpret works of art yourself. Because of this passion, there will always be pieces of art hanging on your walls at home, no matter how small your living space may be.
You’re a good listener.
Being a good listener is an art not easy to master. But for highly sensitive people, who are deeply empathetic, it comes naturally.
You know how to ask thoughtful questions and make people feel like you hear and understand them. Such listening skills are rare and make you a natural for certain professions, like counseling.
Studies show that good listeners focus on understanding rather than replying. They actively listen, make eye contact, and ask questions so the person speaking feels heard and understood. This comes intuitively to highly sensitive people.
“Beauty of whatever kind, in its supreme development, invariably excites the sensitive soul to tears.”- Edgar Allan Poe
You love nature.
You are someone who enjoys the great outdoors. You might enjoy hiking or camping, or be a conservationist, gardener, or biker. As a highly sensitive person, you appreciate the quiet solitude nature bestows and engage with it using all your senses.
You derive joy from listening to birds chirping, observing leaves changing color as fall approaches, feeling sunlight on your skin, and tasting dew drops on morning grass.
Highly sensitive people also need time away from highly structured environments and people. Nature escapes, like outdoor walks, are a reboot for the active brain of a sensitive person.

You’re an animal lover.
You love animals and it’s more than superficial. You feel connected to animals at a deeper level and feel they understand you better than some people. No wonder! Animals are innocent creatures who don’t judge and offer unconditional acceptance. They also provide comfort when you need it most. Many animal whisperers are highly sensitive people.
You make connections others might not.
You may find connections between seemingly unrelated things more than your friends. The same goes for making connections between the past and the present, people’s actions and intentions, and how seemingly dissimilar events relate to each other. As a highly sensitive person, you see connections between things that others might not pick up on.
You prefer deep conversations to small talk.
If you avoid small talk and prefer deep conversations, you might be a highly sensitive person. Highly sensitive people derive little joy talking about mundane things like the weather. Instead, they prefer speaking of deeper topics like philosophy, art, or the natural world and what makes it run.
“The real warriors in this world are the ones that see the details of another’s soul.”
~Shannon L. Alder
You are detail oriented and notice subtleties that other people don’t.
If you’re a highly sensitive person, you’ll likely be detail oriented. Because of your high sensory processing level, you notice things other people might not. This can be a benefit and a hindrance.
You might see imperfections in the work you do. This detail-orientation makes you an extraordinary problem solver and helps you see trends and patterns that others cannot.
Because of your detailed perception of the world, it’s important to manage expectations. Make peace with the fact that nothing is ever perfect because there are too many factors outside your control. It’s important not to waste time striving for the impossible.
The Bottom Line
Highly sensitive people are often misunderstood by society or called fragile or “too sensitive,” but HSPs tend to be more thoughtful and introspective than other people. If that’s you, celebrate your uniqueness!
