1 Thing You Can Do to Stop Adding to the Garbage Patch
We are living in a bad horror flick.

It is the year 2020, and there are island sized mounds of trash (nearly all plastic) that are floating around in the oceans and suffocating the sea life… no one is surprised or does anything on a grander scale to help. The plastic waste epidemic is getting worse and worse. Since 2000, 44% of all plastics ever manufactured has come into existence and half of it has been made in Asia. Experts have predicted that it will take at least 400 years to break down certain types of plastics. Pretty scary, right?
This post is not intended to be an educational enlightenment.
I’m 100% positive that there are much smarter people than myself out there that would be able to tell you all the facts. Kudos to those people, you’re awesome, seriously, you’re helping solve the plastic waste problem. I am merely just a writer that’s currently disgusted with how we (humans) are treating this planet collectively. We are easily blinded by whatever is trending to really care. We can do a much better job at taking care of our home (Earth) and we can start today. Right now.
Let’s talk about coffee.
Since coffee is such a popular thing, most of you can relate to this. Many of us are addicted to the ritual of going to a coffee shop and getting our daily coffee and breakfast. It’s just so convenient — you can drive through and order a whatever-macchiato with 3 shots of blonde espresso in a frothy concoction of white chocolate mocha and whole milk with whipped crème on top…. Just typing that makes me want a coffee. I know I don’t own an espresso machine and probably won’t any time soon, but I do know that I will be a continuous coffee drinker and I do know that those cups that we receive and take with us are to be disposed after use, not reused. So, theoretically, I’m just adding a coffee cup to the Garbage Patch everyday.
So this post is for you all: One thing you can do to stop adding to the great garbage patch.
1) Invest in a reusable coffee cup. There are thousands you can choose from; you can even get one personalized. You can get one for hot or iced drinks, some cups work with both! It is a small investment to make, but think of all of the trash you are not making by doing this one thing! You can literally save some fish lives and feel good about doing something awesome. Be a trendsetter. Oh, also, most coffee houses will give you a discount for bringing your own cup! 😉
I hope that by reading this post you consider setting a trend near you and invest in your own reusable coffee cup! Let’s save the fish and oceans together! If you have any suggestions that are easy and will make a difference, please leave a comment and share!
