$1,000 in 7 Days on Medium Writing from My Couch

Copy THIS strategy

If you want to make money from Medium, this is the strategy you want to follow.

I’m going to get insanely detailed in this breakdown.

I’ve talked about the things I do to get viral views and make thousands every month from Medium before.

In this article, I’ll share 7 steps you can follow yourself to try to replicate my results.

Let’s go!

How to make $1,000+ a Week on Medium?

First, some proof…

At this rate, I’ll make a little over $4,000 for the month.

Here are the 7 steps I follow writing 10 hours per month from the comfort of my couch…

Step 1: Write interesting stuff (for large audiences)

I mentioned this in a previous article. Write what’s interesting but, I want to underscore that it should be for a large audience, as well.

For example, I have looked through pages and pages of stories in the publication Better Marketing. I also examined the stories I’ve personally published there, all to understand what kinds of content perform best.

With that in mind, I will write a story specifically for the Better Marketing publication and their audience of 108,000.

It’s fine to self-publish and write for your followers too but, if you want to make up to $1,000 a month or more from Medium, you’ve got to have a high number of reads and you can get closer to that if you write for a large audience.

How to do this?

Publications. This doesn’t mean I recommend only submitting your stories to publications but try to submit your content to the top publications in your niche regularly. And keep that pubs audience in mind when writing your stories.

Step 2: Make your stories scan-friendly

I’ve been writing this way for a while and it’s the way I like to read articles.

I make paragraphs extremely short with lots of white space.

Here’s an example:

Compared to this….

Do you notice a difference?

These were both published this month, by the way.

One publisher lets me format the articles the way I want and the other has a specific way they like to format their articles, which is the sentence-heavy paragraphed example.

Does it really make that big of a difference?

I’m a lazy reader and I know a lot of other people are like that.

I don’t assume somebody will come across my article and read the entire thing, word for word.

Some people are just scanners and I can totally relate to that.

So, I write for readability and I really think my easy-to-read articles contribute to the number of reads I get, which drives my Medium income.

How to do this?

Write short paragraphs. I go for no more than 2–3 sentence paragraphs and write a lot of one-sentence paragraphs, too.

Try this and see if you notice a change.

Step 3: Batch write

I’m an entrepreneur and I can fit in writing in my schedule where I need to. If you can relate or even if you can’t, batch writing can save you.

Take the time you have available and write all your Medium content in batches.

So, take that hour this week and write 2 articles.

This will help you write more and be more consistent in your writing.

How to do this?

Schedule some time in your week for writing then batch write. Try to keep it distraction-free and I find that using a timer helps me stay on track.

Even as I write this in my bedroom, I have the door closed, TV off, with some light music playing in the background, a cup of coffee by my side, and a timer set.

Step 4: Read stories on Medium and get inspired

I saw similar stories about YouTube views floating around Medium for a while.

It inspired me to write this:

And that article ended up being my most viral story yet!

How to do this?

Read Medium stories.

I have the $5 subscription and it’s one of the best investments I’ve made.

Peruse Medium and read stories from your favorite writers, use the search function to find stories you like and topics you write about and do this often.

It’ll inspire you and it will help you do some good competitive research when it comes to writing your own stories.

Step 5: Make your headlines colorful

I’ve written this so many times so I’ll keep it short.

Headlines sell.

They’re what’s going to get your reader to click your story to read it so make it good.

Here are some headline tools which can help:

What’s a colorful headline?

It’s a headline that will stop your reader dead in their tracks. It’s attention-grabbing and something that they’ve got to read.

How to do this?

Practice.

I try to keep my headlines short and simple.

I love using numbers in the headline which can be good for crafting attention-grabbing titles and up your number of reads.

Step 6: Internally link your stories

Internal links to your other stories are a great way to instantly boost your traffic across your Medium stories.

This is super easy. Just do it.

How to do this?

Link up to 2–3 (or more) Medium stories in the content you’re writing.

Step 7: Don’t be afraid to sell

This may not get me more reads on Medium but it does help me make more money from Medium.

Do not be afraid to sell to your audience.

I do this all the time.

I’m a course creator and author. I also offer services to clients like Pinterest management, content writing, and others.

I talk about this in my stories.

Sometimes I write entire Medium articles dedicated to what I’m selling.

Don’t go overboard with this but every now and then, why not?

Here are some examples of stories I’ve written that sell products:

How to do this?

Start linking to your products in your stories. And, don’t be afraid to write entire stories dedicated to what you’re selling.

Your Turn

That’s what I do to make money on Medium.

It’s helped me make over $1,000 in the first 7 days of this month. I hope this has been helpful.
