It’s almost funny how many excuses there are to put off trying to work for yourself.

Trust me, I understand. I was in the corporate world for 10 years, thinking that “someday” I would do something else, maybe be a writer or work for myself or something more creative.

“Someday” always seemed far away. Until it wasn’t.

Until I decided to at least TRY.

I figured it couldn’t hurt and would be free to try to get a client who would pay me to write for them. After all, if I didn’t spend any money or very much time, then when it didn’t work, I couldn’t blame myself. Hey, at least I tried!

But that’s not what happened. I kicked butt and got clients quickly and realized I could be a real writer.

It made me want to smack myself. Why didn’t I try 1, 2, 5, or 10 years ago?

What would you do if you could be anything?

Say you want to be a writer, but don’t know how to get paid for it. OK, let’s break it down.

In order to be a writer, you just need people to pay you. And to prove you are a good writer, you need writing samples.

Your samples can be published on a website, your own blog/site, or even just PDFs that you wrote and have to send as attachments. You do not need to be published on Forbes or Huffington Post to be professional, you just need to be a GOOD writer.

If you want to write for a specific industry or niche, use your writing samples as a place to show your knowledge in that industry/niche. For example, if you want to work in the car industry, try writing 3 samples on different parts of the industry. Perhaps one on pros and cons of hybrid vehicles, one on the rise of renewable energy and its effect on the gas industry, and maybe a third on Volkswagen’s newest lineup. Three very different pieces within one common niche will show variety and depth.

To find clients, reach out to some sites. To continue with the same example, you could reach out to regional online car magazines, local car dealerships, or websites of car enthusiasts, and simply talk to them.

Try something like this:

Hi, I saw your website and I love your recent article on XYZ. I am also a car enthusiast and a writer, and wanted to see you were interested in growing your content marketing and building your blog. Attached are three pieces I wrote on different areas of the industry. Do you have time tomorrow around 3 pm to jump on a call and discuss?

When you send a simple, personalized pitch you will open doors for yourself. This direct marketing is a great way to find clients — and it is free!

Good luck and let me know how it goes!
