“I said to Steve, ‘You just need to take your time, and you can stay away from the game or whatever you want to do.’ And he said, ‘Coach, the only time I can keep from thinking about my dad is when I’m playing basketball.’ ”
“It would be something that would keep a young man from doing anything for a while afterwards, but I don’t know, he’s just always had maturity beyond his years,” Olson said.
“PLO! PLO!” “Where’s your dad?” “Your father’s history.” And, “Why don’t you join the Marines and go back to Beirut?”

事後,他公開指責這班學生是“the scum of the Earth” ,而Arizona State的體育總監Charles Harris亦發公開信道歉。
“I just felt like that moment did not reflect the institution, and every once in a while we all make a mistake, and my job I felt was to own it,” Harris said. “He was incredibly gracious. … He’s really an incredible person, someone who survived and rose above unimaginable tragedy. If you look at him over the span of the past 25 years, that embodies who he is. That’s how he carries himself. I think that told us a lot about Steve Kerr.”

“This is part of the genius of [Kerr], he figured out how to take his physical reality and be able to play competitively at the highest level,” former Arizona graduate assistant Randy Brown said. “He was a great study, and he’s so competitive.
“There was a pressure that came with it when you were his teammate that I had never felt from anybody,” Kerr said. “It was a great test. You had to step up and compete and perform every day.”

“I started talking back,” he said. “I’m not sure anyone had done that before. Then I started fouling him. Not like I could make any impact on him physically, but … I got the ball and he was guarding me and I think I used my off arm and threw an elbow or something, to get him off of me, and he kept talking. I’m yapping and the next play, I’m running through the lane and he gives me a forearm shiver in the middle of the lane and I give him one back.
“And he basically … came after me.”
Later, teammate Judd Buechler told Kerr that the scuffle reminded him of a familiar movie scene. “I was like the kid in Jurassic Park who got attacked by the velociraptor,” Kerr said, laughing. “I had no chance. It was just mayhem. We were screaming at each other.”
