何解德語很難 Why learning German is so hard

German grammar is considered to be very clear and has rules and regulations that can be followed. But after living in Germany for a few years, I feel like it’s going to take a lot longer than I expected to master the language.

Aside from the vocabularies being long and varied, one of the fundamental problems is that in German, ‘the’ have different ‘genders’: (der) masculine, (die) feminine, (das) neuter, and they would be den, dem, des in some variations.

I have a feeling that even you know which one to use, you would say them wrong when you have to think about ‘genders’ and talk at the same time.

The “Gender” of the nouns has to be roughly remembered, they essentially alternate under four different “cases”; if the gender of the nouns is wrong, the whole sentence would also be wrong, because the gender of the noun determines the ending of the adjective, and many other things as well.

In the first few months learning German, I felt like no matter how careful I was, I would have grammatical errors as soon as I spoke, so it would be better to ignore whether the “gender” is correct – and just leave it wrong! The important thing is able to express what I wanted to say.

Then I gradually became the so-called “Fließend-Falsch-Sprecher”. (Fluent-false-Speaker)

However, if I want to speak correctly from just the very beginning, I would have to think over every sentence before I open my mouth, and people would think I don’t understand German and leave the conversation, that way I also won’t get any further.

My English is far from perfect, but compared to German, I think if I could only communicate in English in everyday life and at work, life would be much easier hahahahahh.

So what’s my advice?

Keep learning – If you’re wrong, you need to know you’re wrong. And next time you can get it wrong again, again and again – but you will find your own way of learning.
